Is Van den Berg good enough to play for Liverpool next season? Stats suggest so

Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg is currently on loan with Preston. The 20-year-old has become a key player for the Championship side.

A Reds fan NotoriousL19 has checked the youngster's stats. And if rumours about Joe Gomez leaving Liverpool are true, perhaps the Dutchman could be the Reds' fourth-choice centre-back next season.

"Sepp van den Berg has played 3,735 minutes (41.5 90s) across all comps for Preston this season, as a regular starter. He recently turned 20," NotoriousL19 tweeted.

"By comparison, Virgil leads Liverpool in minutes played this season, with 3,360 (37.3 90s) across all comps. An example of his countryman.

"In Championship games, Sepp has averaged 1.6 interceptions / game, 2.1 tackles / game and 3.2 clearances / game.

"Also averaged 3.1 aerial duels won (at 69% success rate, nice!) and 2.9 ground duels won at 60% success rate. And to boot, he’s contributed 0.5 key passes / game from right centre-back.

"In recent interviews, Sepp has said he is committed to returning to Liverpool and carving out playing time there.

"If Joe [Gomez] wants to move on in the summer (with a current contract expiring in 2024), Liverpool could do worse than to give Sepp a longer look as the 4th CB replacement."
