League table, teams likely to be promoted & more: Overview of what's going on in the Championship

The EFL Championship is the second division of English football, sitting below the Premier League. While Liverpool are concerned with a title race of our own, the race to get promoted is also quite interesting.

Here, Tribuna.com takes a look at what is going on in the league below and what you need to know about it.

The league table

Some teams have played 39 games already this season - with 24 teams in the division, each team played 46 games in the Championship.

Let's take a look at the standings so far which will give us a rough idea of who is likely to be promoted to the Premier League next season:

As you can see, Fulham are running away with the lead and are very likely to be promoted, while the race below gets a little tighter.

Teams most likely to be promoted

Here's how promotion works - each season, the top two teams of the division gain automatic promotion into the Premier League. At the moment, Fulham and Bournemouth are sitting pretty comfortably in those spots and barring a late collapse, should be in the Premier League next season.

For the third spot, the teams sitting from the third to sixth position enter a playoff battle.

In the play-offs, the third-placed team plays against the sixth-placed team and the fourth-placed team plays against the fifth-placed team in two-legged semi-finals (home and away).

The winners of each semi-final then compete in a single match at Wembley stadium with the winner being promoted and getting the Championship Playoff trophy.

It's really difficult to call which team will win the playoffs at the moment but Bournemouth and Sheffield United are the bookies favourites right now. Let us know if you have any favourites in this race!

Surprise teams

Luton Town are the biggest surprise of the Championship this season. In the 2017/18 season, they were in League Two, which is the fourth division of English football. To dream of Premier League football just four years later is insane stuff!

Wayne Rooney's Derby County received a 21-point deduction at the beginning of the season for going into administration and then breaching some finance rules. They are currently last in the league but can still climb to safety, as only the bottom two are relegated.

If Rooney can manage this escape, that will be some achievement for his side.

Liverpool's record against possibly promoted teams

vs Fulham - 41 wins, 17 draws, 13 losses

vs Bournemouth - 13 wins, 3 draws, one loss

vs Sheffield United - 64 wins, 31 draws, 45 losses

vs Luton Town - 18 wins, 13 draws, 7 losses
