Klopp becoming more 'hands-on' with recruitment at Liverpool - multiple sources

According to The Times and The Athletic, Jurgen Klopp has been taking a more 'hands-on' approach with the transfers at Liverpool over the past year.

In particular, it was Klopp who pushed the hardest to sign Darwin Nunez last summer after the Uruguayan striker impressed him in the Champions League clash for Benfica.

The boss and his staff also clamoured for Luis Diaz's signing in the January transfer window to prevent him from joining Tottenham.

This is a stark difference from Klopp's first years at the club. For example, it was Michael Edwards' idea to sign Mohamed Salah in 2017 while Klopp preferred Julian Brandt. Fortunately, the data department managed to convince the manager to change his mind.

Now, with both Edwards gone and his successor Julian Ward on his way out, Klopp's influence will only rise - even though head of recruitment Dave Fallows and chief scout Barry Hunter will remain in place.

At the same time, Klopp reportedly wanted Ward to stay in his role. It's not clear then how much he would relish an increased responsibility when it comes to recruitment.
