Liverpool unlikely to sign a midfielder in January due to 'limited funds' — The Athletic

Liverpool are unlikely to sign a new midfielder in the January transfer window. According to The Athletic, their stance has to do with the limited funds available for Jurgen Klopp to spend in the market right now.

Klopp confirmed to reporters that signing Cody Gakpo took 'a financial stretch' for the club which means spending heavily on a midfielder this winter is almost impossible.

There are a handful of Premier League midfielders linked to Liverpool including Matheus Nunes (Wolves), Moises Caicedo (Brighton) and Joao Palhinha (Fulham) but none of those names will cost less than the €42m Liverpool spent on Gakpo.

Jude Bellingham is also on Liverpool's radar but his price tag means he's a luxury the Reds won't be able to afford given FSG's financial stance.

From all indications, Liverpool will enter the market for a new midfielder at the end of the season when James Milner, Arthur and Naby Keita are expected to leave the club.
