Liverpool transfer spending compared to other big six clubs — it's almost shocking

According to Transfermarkt, Liverpool are the lowest spender in the transfer market this season compared to other Premier League big six clubs — Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United.

The Reds spent £81.27 million last summer, which was the lowest of the ‘Big Six’ by a fair margin, per The Athletic.

Arsenal (£118.9m) were the second-lowest spender in the summer with Manchester City (£125.6m), Tottenham Hotspur (£152.9m), Manchester United (£214.2m) and the biggest spenders, Chelsea (£253.79m) completing the set.

Given that Liverpool sold players like Takumi Minamino, Sadio Mane, Ben Davies and Neco Williams for a combined £70million, the Reds' net spend stands at £8.6m for the summer.

That net spend is a pinch of salt compared to Chelsea (£204.5m), Man United (£203.9m), Man City (£125.6m), Tottenham (£118m) and Arsenal (£97.4m).

Liverpool signed Cody Gakpo in January for an initial £37m. His signing took their net spending to £50m for the season when the transfers of Darwin Nunez, Calvin Ramsay and Fabio Carvalho are taken into account. But compared to other big six clubs' net spend this season, Liverpool's frugality is almost shocking.

This goes to explain the outcry by fans about FSG's lack of investment in the squad. In response, the American owners are seeking new investors to help fund the club expenditure going forward.

What's clear is that Liverpool are not competing with their rivals at this rate. That has to change for the club to continue achieving success.
