Liverpool U19s defeated the Porto U19 team on penalties in the UEFA Youth League round of 16.

Porto scored first through Jorge Meireles' 8th minute penalty but the Reds responded in the second half through a Frauendorf goal.

The game eventually went to penalties and Porto had the early advantage as Ben Doak missed Liverpool's opening penalty.

Liverpool scored their four other penalties and Porto their first four. It looked set to be the end of the road for the young Reds. Ironically enough, it was Luis Diaz's brother Jesus Diaz that was set to take the fifth penalty for Porto but ended up missing.

The two teams went to sudden death and Porto faltered on their second penalty as Umaro Cande hit the bar, sending Liverpool through to the next round.

The Liverpool youngsters rushed to their goalie to celebrate and out of the camera's view, Ben Doak got caught up in a scuffle with the Porto players and what followed was a huge brawl between the two sides.

It is unclear as to exactly what happened that instigated the fight but in the end the Porto keeper and final penalty taker Umaro Cande were shown the red card, as was Liverpool striker Lewis Koumas.

“Whether there was a little bit of antagonising I don’t know,” coach Barry Lewtas said later. “It would be really unfair for me to comment. It was a shame the way it went. I could sense from the bench that if a few things went against them (Porto) it could go a certain way.

“Sometimes you have 30-odd young boys there and it can spill over. It was a bit disappointing because it looked like the playground a little bit towards the end. And I don’t think our performance replicated that.”
