'He's the closest Liverpool have to De Bruyne or Gerrard': Carragher urges Klopp to move Trent to midfield

Jamie Carragher has recommended Jurgen Klopp to move Trent Alexander-Arnold into midfield to bring the best out of him.

"I have no idea if Alexander-Arnold has ambitions to go back to where he started and play in midfield, Gareth Southgate tried it and was criticised in some quarters, including by Klopp.

"To me the move was understandable to try to get the most out of Alexander-Arnold in an England team with a completely different profile and mindset. In terms of his passing range, Alexander-Arnold is as good as anyone in Europe.

"And the closest Liverpool have to Kevin De Bruyne or Steven Gerrard. Given how desperate Liverpool are for a creative midfielder, would turning him into a No 8 so he can fill those areas to whip those extraordinary passes into the penalty area be such a radical move?

"With Stefan Bajčetić out for the season, would Klopp even consider it as an immediate measure? I am convinced Alexander-Arnold will return to midfield eventually, whether it is in his late twenties or early thirties.

"It does not matter how many medals a player has won, the best will always be looking at ways to get better."

Now I say it again. Trent have nothing of the traits he needs to play in our midfield and will never be used in a midfield of 3. Never! He is bad in tight spaces which a midfielder always faces. He is bad in dribbles in static situations and he doesn't have the instincts that a central midfield needs. Trent needs to see the pitch in front of him and is a straight runner. He would be awful in our midfield and that's why he hasn't been played there and never will. .That's proof enough and in fact I claim that those who thinks he could play in a midfield of 3 got extremely bad football knowledge

I agree with you Christian Trent is very easily turned and left for dead. there isnt a lot more to extract from Trent. he can cross and pass a ball like no other most of the time. but his no defender. and i feel he will show the same weakness in midfield as he does in right back. he might of started out as a midfielder but that was back then. the game has moved on since. he's just to easily turned, and stands to sqaure when defending. not a lot of awareness of whats going on around him...

That's the thing, Trent doesn't have a clue what is happening around him which makes him useless in midfield. He would be totally lost.

Trent would be worst in the midfield because he lacks the skill sets and mental character. Playing in the midfield is more than just passing the ball around.

Plus a really mediocre manager (even more so than Bodgers) has already tried him in midfield. The England clown tried him there and he was just as bad in midfield as in RB. 🙄 Although you could argue that the amateur level of international football meant that the players around him maybe couldn't support him properly. 🤔

The funny thing is, Trent is world class as a rb in our team when the team plays well and Trent is in form. But when he's not in form he is really bad and moving him around to a place he can't play in will just make our team even worse. We need a better backup rightback

Couldn't agree more Christian. I think if Trent had proper competition for his place then that would give him the proverbial kick up th'arse to improve his game. As it is he could stand about playing on his gucci iPhone and still get selected for the next match. 🙄

obviously Ramsay isn't the answer has an injury record to match Keita. I know Gomez is a useless centre back but he's not a bad full back.

I'd love to see Jurgen give Trent a run of 6 or 6 games in a midfield role just to have a look at it playing him there for a single game proves nothing it takes time for a player to adjust and Trent definetly has the passing range to be better than most current midfielders in England. Worth a go right now because he can't do any worse than what our currently available midfielders are doing

Actually Jamie has spoke my mind We need some creativity in the midfield we're always to exposed when every team knows well that our creativity is from wing back that needs to change Asap
