6 footballers Jurgen Klopp signed in his first summer at Liverpool — where are they now? Answered

Jurgen Klopp signed six players in his first summer transfer window at Liverpool back in 2016.

One of them is still at the club, two have retired and three continue playing football elsewhere.

Sadio Mane

The Senegalese went on to become a Liverpool legend during his six years at the club and left for Bayern last summer.

Sadio has 11 goals and 5 assists in 28 appearances so far this season.

Loris Karius

The German keeper signed for Newcastle as their fourth-choice goalkeeper last summer but a bizarre turn of events saw him start in the League Cup final against United.

Karius did pretty well against United despite the Magpies losing the game.

Joel Matip

The defender is still at Liverpool, although he has been quite shaky defensively this season. Staying fit has also been an issue.

Matip's contract expires in 2024 and there are rumours he could be allowed to leave this summer.

Ragnar Klavan

The centre-back is yet to officially retire, although he hasn't played competitive football since leaving Estonian side Paide Linnameeskond last year.

This month, he returned to Anfield to take part in the Liverpool Legends game against Celtic.

Other than that, he's competed in the Estonian Dancing with the Stars show. Enjoy a recording of his dance:

Alex Manninger

The Austrian was signed as a backup goalkeeper and didn't make a single appearance for the Reds during his only season at Anfield. He retired after leaving Liverpool.

“I’m catching up with a lot of things that did not happen during my career,” Manninger said in 2019, revealing he had rejected an offer to stay at Liverpool as a goalkeeping coach.

It was also reported that Manninger went on to pursue his interest in carpentry after retirement.

Gini Wijnaldum

The Dutchman left Liverpool in 2021 on contract expiry and there's still a Gini-shaped hole in the Reds' midfield.

The 32-year-old's post-LFC career is a good proof that grass is not always greener on the other side. After a poor season with PSG where he was named Flop Signing of the Year, he was loaned out to Roma, where he's made just 11 appearances so far because of injuries.
