'How long can this go on, where’s it all heading': Milner proposes alternate summers with no football to protect players

James Milner has proposed that there be no international football tournaments every other year to protect players from injury and fatigue.

"This year has been tough, obviously. The amount of injuries we've had. I think it must be the worst season for injuries on record, so I think that's not helped.

"Every other year there shouldn’t be an international tournament and players should be given the full summer off for sure. How long can this go on? The intensity and the number of games.

“That’s something I would do for sure – every other summer off and then you can go as full on as you want over the season but give them a break. Otherwise, where’s it all heading?”

James Milner looked back at his Liverpool career and shared his thoughts on how he feels about his achievements at the club.

‌“I'm fortunate now that we've managed to achieve what we have, and pretty much what I wanted to achieve when I came here. That doesn't happen too often, does it?" Milner said.

‌“I’ve been here for eight years - lucky enough to wear the number seven shirt here - and I don’t suppose it will be seen in the full back positions again!”

“I wanted to come here and win trophies and have success. There weren’t too many trophies in the recent history before I came and it was like, 'Can you change that? Can you go and win a league title?'

‌“Let’s face it, the league was the one the fans wanted - it hadn’t been won for a long time and we knew they were desperate for it.

"To walk away now and know that's been done and achieved, that's amazing. And that's exactly why I wanted to come here and we've managed to do that.”
