FA release statement after Man United fan appeared to mock Hillsborough tragedy

On Saturday evening, a Man United fan was arrested after wearing a shirt with words ‘Not Enough’ above the number 97 to the FA Cup final at Wembley.

The picture on social media drew outrage from Liverpool fans who saw it as mocking the victims of the Hillsborough tragedy that took 97 lives.

An FA statement read: "The FA strongly condemns the actions of the individual who wore a shirt referencing the Hillsborough disaster ahead of the Emirates FA Cup final at Wembley.

"We saw a photograph of the offensive shirt on social media and immediately started working to identify the perpetrator. Our security teams were able to quickly locate the individual based on the image, and we welcome the swift action which was then taken by the police.

"We will not tolerate abuse relating to the Hillsborough of any football tragedy at Wembley Stadium and we will continue to work with the authorities to ensure strong action is taken against the perpetrators."

The individual has since been named as James White, 33, of Warwickshire. He has been charged with displaying threatening or abusive writing likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress. He's been bailed to appear in court in London on June 19.

Man United fan wears '97 NOT ENOUGH' shirt to FA Cup final, gets arrested

Liverpool were not involved in the FA Cup final but still somehow got involved in the events surrounding the game.

A Man United fan was pictured wearing a No.97 shirt with the caption 'Not enough'.

That immediately drew ire from the Liverpool faithful who took it as a disgusting message referring to the Hillsborough disaster. 97 Liverpool fans lost their lives as a result of the tragedy.

A widespread social media campaign drew the attention of the police who have informed that they arrested the man at the stadium.

Their statement on Twitter reads: 'We are aware of this and have worked proactively with officials at @wembleystadium to identify the individual. He has been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and taken into custody.'

If this was really meant as such an insult, we can only hope that the repercussion will be appropriate.

34th anniversary of Hillsborough disaster: Liverpool commemorate 97 fans who lost their lives

Liverpool have released an official statement to commemorate the 97 supporters who died as a result of the Hillsborough disaster exactly 34 years ago.

"Liverpool Football Club remembers the 97 supporters who died in the Hillsborough tragedy, on the 34th anniversary of the disaster.

"As a result of the events that unfolded on April 15, 1989 at the FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest, 97 children, women and men lost their lives.

"For more than three decades, the bereaved families and survivors of the tragedy have demonstrated remarkable courage, dignity and resilience in search of truth and justice.

"In April 2016, an inquest jury concluded that each of the Hillsborough victims had been unlawfully killed and that no role was played by the supporters in causing the disaster.

"Our thoughts today, as always, are with all those affected by the tragedy at Hillsborough and the 97 fans who will never be forgotten."
