- Man United are reportedly set to make their first signing of the January transfer window by signing young Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo from Independiente del Valle.
- The Red Devils reportedly beat RB Leipzig to his signing and want to complete his signing quickly before the post-Brexit rules are implemented in the new year.
- Here are 4 things you should know about our potential new signing.
Where does he play?
The 19-year-old is naturally a defensive midfielder who loves to sit just ahead of the defenders, break opposition moves and excelling at recovering possession for his team.
He’s also efficient in moving the ball forward and has loads of energy to help him thrive under pressure. Caicedo has also operated as a box-to-box midfielder for Independiente recently, suggesting he has the technical ability to operate in multiple areas in midfield.
Already making records with Ecuador
Caicedo made his national team debut for Ecuador earlier this year and has put in some very impressive performances since.
He scored in their 4-2 win over Uruguay in a FIFA World Cup qualifier game, becoming the first play born in the 21st century to score in a CONMEBOL World Cup qualifier. The 19-year-old has already made quite the mark for his national team and made himself into a mainstay in the squad.
Idolizes Antonio Valencia
Caicedo is said to try and match the style of Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante in midfield, but his idol is former Man United captain Antonio Valencia.
The youngster confirmed that to the Copa Libertadores’ official website a few months ago, giving a simple reason by saying: “He tried very hard, like I'm doing now.”
Excelling at a young age
Caicedo made his debut for the Independiente del Valle at the age of 17 in 2019 and has since climbed up high into becoming a regular for the Ecuadorian side. In 2020, he has made 28 appearances for Independiente (in all competitions), scoring 6 goals and providing 2 assists.
This is all despite playing as a defensive midfielder or box-to-box midfielder on most occasions, as the youngster has excelled in the Copa Libertadores, scoring 2 and assisting 1 goal in 6 appearances. The 19-year-old has proven himself as an impactful midfielder who excels in his defensive duties and also provides occasional brilliance moving forward.
