Speaking to the Metro, Rio Ferdinand said: "I don't think Manchester United would buy someone to come in and play [every week at right-back].
"I think whoever's coming in there is going to be playing backup. They spent £50 million on Aaron Wan-Bissaka, not to be a backup or no.2.
"Kieran Trippier wouldn't be my choice if I'm honest, but I see the qualities he has. He wouldn't be my choice in terms of the profile of player that I'd be bringing in to play as a no.2 right-back."
Wan-Bissaka is currently the only dedicated right-back at Man United and the Red Devils are looking for someone to come in and compete with the Englishman next season.
Atletico Madrid's right-back Tripper has been linked with a move to Old Trafford with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly unhappy with Wan-Bissaka's 'attacking output'.
