'Not a surprise': Gary Neville reflects on Rashford's omission from England's starting XI vs Croatia

Speaking on Sky Sports, Gary Neville said: "I think you are always going to be in a situation where Mason Mount is going to play unless something happens with his form or injury.

"And then you are talking about Phil Foden or Jack Grealish. And then one of the quicker ones, which is Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho or Raheem Sterling. So, for me, it [Rashford's absence] isn't a surprise.

"Rashford and Grealish aren't unlucky, not as much as they would have done 15-20 years ago. They'll be disappointed. It's the first game of the tournament. I think players are more conditioned into thinking it's a squad game."

Not a single Manchester United player was included in England's starting XI against Croatia although Rashford made an appearance from the bench in the second half with the Three Lions securing a 1-0 win.

The Old Trafford striker is currently struggling with several injuries (shoulder and foot) and is set to undergo surgery ahead of the 2021/22 campaign once Euro 2020 is over.
