'There's nothing certain, but..': Cavani opens up on a possible future move to South America

When asked about the reasons behind extending his stay at Man United for another year, Edinson Cavani said: “I decided to play there for one more year. I think there's a good team which is one reason to stay.”

He was also asked about whether he spoke to other clubs about moving in the summer before confirming his stay at United. Cavani replied: “There were negotiations. My brother (and agent) had some chats ... things that happen in football, they're normal.

“There's nothing certain, but I think at some point I'll come back to South America, I'll play here.

“Honestly, that’s what I’m thinking. I believe every human being’s life is based on objectives, on desires you want to achieve, on arriving at certain goals.

“From a football perspective my aim at the national team level, and in general, is to go to the World Cup in Qatar and from there to step aside and dedicate myself to my family, my people, my things.

“I think this is the last dance."

Cavani seemed primed to leave United at the end of last season after his dad revealed that he wanted to come back and play for Boca Juniors. However, after an impressive final few months of the campaign, the Uruguayan decided to stay and is contracted to United until the end of the 2021/22 season.

The Red Devils will have to sign a top-quality striker to replace El Matador once he leaves – which is why they haven’t yet ruled out a desire to sign Erling Haaland in a future transfer window.
