Most Manchester United fans can't help but feel a little sad about Jack Grealish nearing a move to Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola's side has submitted an official bid of around £100 million - Aston Villa are reportedly close to accepting it.
It wasn't very long ago that Grealish was linked with United and it made sense. Something about the versatile 25-year-old screams 'United', doesn't it?
However, there's no reason for us to feel like we missed out. Tribuna.com analyses why:
Exorbitant asking price
The Red Devils have already signed Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho for a combined fee of a little over £100m.
That's how much Grealish alone would've cost which puts things into perspective. It's no secret that football clubs' finances have been dealt a severe blow because of the coronavirus pandemic.
And Grealish seems more like a 'luxury investment' at this point. He's got the killer instincts, skills and more but it ends there. Signing him wouldn't have solved any of our problems on the field - which brings us to the next reason.
Too many options in our squad
Grealish can play as a winger and a midfielder, so where would he fit our current squad?
We have Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood, Daniel James, Amad, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard. In addition, there are younger players like Facundo Pellistri, Anthony Elanga, Hannibal Mejbri and Shola Shoretire just waiting for one chance.
To spend £100m on a player who'd face intense competition for a starting spot simply doesn't sound logical. It would've been overkill since we already have a congested unit up front.
We've signed Sancho
After pursuing him for over a year, United have finally signed Sancho and he cost less than Grealish. He's also contributed more in terms of goals and assists and is only 21.
We needed a proper right winger and Sancho has solved that. Now, we have to find a proper defensive midfielder and a striker instead of signing Grealish just because we can afford to.
Fixing the right positions
If United were involved in negotiations for Grealish, could we have signed Varane and Sancho so easily this summer?
Not to mention, the financial repercussions would've been massive in the middle of a pandemic that simply refuses to go away.
The right wing is sorted and so is centre-back - these positions were a bigger priority than simply making a statement by signing Grealish.
Perhaps even United could've made him the most expensive Premier League player but would it be worth it?
We don't think so. Not when you look at the bigger picture, at least.
