Mbappe saga, CR7's stunning return & more: 8 capturing episodes during the summer transfer window you might've missed

With the latest summer transfer window done and dusted, Tribuna.com takes a look at some of the most talked-about - and incredible - things that have happened:

Barca-Griezmann-Atletico saga

Barcelona took out a loan and mortgaged future earnings to fund a €120 million transfer for Antoine Griezmann in 2019. And now, they've loaned him back to his former club with the option for him to re-join them for just €40 million!

You'd think losing Lionel Messi would have made them more cautious, but no. This is Joan Laporta's world and the rest of us are just a part of it. Or so he'd like to think.

CR7's return to Old Trafford after City links

On 17 August, we posted a fan's opinion where his 'theory' suggested that Cristiano Ronaldo's links to Manchester City are just an attempt to get Manchester United into the game. And guess what, it worked!

Sir Alex Ferguson, Bruno Fernandes, Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and, of course, the fans rallied together and got the 'prodigal son' back home in less than 24 hours. If that's not magic, what is?

PSG vs Real Madrid - for Mbappe

In a post-pandemic market, PSG demanded an exorbitant €200 million-plus price tag for Kylian Mbappe. The best part is his contract expires in less than 12 months!

But wait - you'd think no club would be foolish enough to accept PSG's whims. Turns out, Real Madrid are not just any club. They actually submitted a bid worth €220 million only for PSG to troll them back with 'nope'.

Mbappe remains a PSG player for now but Madrid may still have the last laugh if the Frenchman joins them for free next summer.

Eintracht's secret tactic to retain a player

What do you do when you don't want your player to leave? Well, you give interested clubs the wrong email id.

Or at least that's what Eintracht Frankfurt did to fend off Lazio's interest in Filip Kostic. Talk about extreme measures!

Haters keep hating, Chelsea keep loaning

Messi left Barca to join PSG while CR7 returned to United for one last dance. 2021 has seen a lot of bizarre things happen but it's comforting to know that no matter what, Chelsea's loan system will stay the same.

They sent out nine (!!!) players on loan this summer which include names like Emerson Palmieri (Lyon, loan), Tiemoue Bakayoko (AC Milan, loan), Danny Drinkwater (Reading, loan) and Michy Batshuayi (Besiktas, loan).

Liverpool linked with everyone - to sign no one

When the window started, Liverpool were linked with Erling Haaland, Saul Niguez and many others.

Fast forward to now and they've only signed Ibrahima Konate despite losing Georgino Wijnaldum this summer. Not their best squad depth since Jurgen Klopp took charge!

Ross Barkley without a squad number

That's right - forgotten England player Ross Barkley was expected to leave Chelsea on a last-minute loan to Burnley.

However, the Clarets changed their mind and have left Barkley in limbo. He's not been registered for the first team and is currently without a shirt number. His only options are to continue playing for the U23 side or try for an exit in January.

Maitland-Niles publicly confronts Arsenal over failed loan

Arguably one of the most unexpected stories of the transfer window, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, 24, shocked fans when he publicly questioned Arsenal's decision over not loaning him to Everton.

He posted the following on Instagram: "All I wanna do is go where I'm wanted and where I'm gonna play."

Maitland-Niles is yet to start for the Gunners this term and he's certainly not getting any younger. His concern is valid but the way he went about expressing it has reportedly not sat well with Mikel Arteta.
