United have only sold 5 players for a profit over the last decade

Man United might’ve had a rather luxurious transfer window in terms of signing players, but they've continuously had problems in selling unecessary players over the last decade.

The Red Devils signed the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, and Raphael Varane to bolster their squad for the season.

Dan James

However, they were only able to make a profit over the sale of Dan James to Leeds United for around £25m.

In fact, James’ sale is one of only 5 players they’ve sold for a profit over the last 10 years! Here are the others.

Alexander Buttner

The Red Devils managed to get a small profit when selling left-back Alexander Buttner to Dinamo Moscow for around £1.8m in 2014.

Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez

They also sold Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez for around £7.3m to Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, making a decent profit after having signed him for around £6.5m in 2010.

Daley Blind

United made a profit of around £2m for the sale of Daley Blind to Ajax in 2018 for £18m, having initially bought him for £16m.

Chris Smalling

Before James’ sale, the last senior player United sold for a profit was Chris Smalling after AS Roma signed him for £13.6m last year – fetching United a decent profit having bought him for only £7m in 2010.

Selling woes continue

The Red Devils were unable to find buyers for Phil Jones this summer and opted against selling Jesse Lingard as well – while more than 10 players were sent out on loan!

United have also allowed many senior players like Ander Herrera and Sergio Romero leave for free in recent years after being unable to sell them for a fee - and are also under threat of losing Paul Pogba for nothing next year.
