Nemanja Matic was the only player on the pitch in the Tottenham vs Manchester United game on Saturday without a poppy.

Premier League players wear the World War I remembrance token during the month of November to commemorate the fallen soldiers and victims of the war.

But the 33-year-old Serb believes that it is not right for him to wear the red poppy because his home country was bombed by the NATO air forces back in 1999.

Matic explained his stance in 2018: "I recognise fully why people wear poppies, I totally respect everyone's right to do so. However, for me it is only a reminder of an attack that I felt personally as a young, frightened 12-year old boy living in Vrelo, as my country was devastated by the bombing of Serbia."
