Rating Man United performance vs Man City based on 4 key factors

Manchester United were simply outclassed by Manchester City in a 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford on Saturday.

There is no other way to describe the dismal show. City scored twice before half-time but all hopes of a comeback were shattered as the Red Devils fared even worse after the break.

Amid immense pressure on the players and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Tribuna.com breaks down that shocking performance.

Tactics

First of all, were there any tactics in play as far as United are concerned?

The 5-3-2 formation worked against Tottenham but even a defensive set-up was not enough to keep the visitors quiet.

Ole reverted to five men at the back, with Eric Bailly coming in for the injured Raphael Varane.

As fate would have it, the Ivorian centre-back scored an own goal which gifted City an advantage within the first seven minutes of the game.

The infamous McFred duo once again struggled against better players in the midfield, allowing the opponents to find the gaps and torment our weak defence.

The worst part is probably that this isn't even City's strongest side. Jack Grealish did not start, they lack a proper centre-forward... and yet, they made our players look worse than a bunch of schoolboys.

Ole later reverted to a 4-2-3-1 in the second half. Unfortunately, that's around the same time that United completely gave up.

Attack

Okay, where do we start?

The highlight of the game was the fact that United had more attempts [2] on their own goal than they did on City's [1]. And that one effort came via Cristiano Ronaldo. Who is surprised?

Edinson Cavani's absence through injury prompted Ole to deploy Mason Greenwood alongside Ronaldo.

For some reason, the duo looked disjointed up top. There was one moment where Ronaldo tried to score from an offside position even though Greenwood was in a better place to hit the target.

Besides that, there's honestly not much to write about. United failed to get the ball out of their own half numerous times, which means they spent most of the time defending.

There was no creativity or desire to score goals from the home side.

Attack score - 2/10

Defence

If you thought the attack was poor, wait till we get to the defence.

The backline unravelled the second that Bailly scored an own goal. From there on it was 'let's lay low and hope David De Gea saves the ball'.

After Bailly, Lindelof too tested his abilities as a striker by hitting our own net but thankfully, the ball didn't go in.

In the first half, the defence was so shoddy that De Gea had to make three big saves in quick succession. That prompted several fans to comment that the score should be at least 5-0 to City.

For Bernardo Silva's goal, there was a grave lapse in communication between Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw. Both players seemingly gave up and in the confusion, De Gea too messed up the save.

If fans thought the attackers were missing on Saturday, it's safe to say the defenders were in a slumber that could put Sleeping Beauty to shame.

Had it not been for De Gea, City could've beaten us worse than Liverpool.

Defence score - 2/10

Fighting spirit

Derby day in Manchester is famous for the passion shown by the players and the fans. Unfortunately, on Saturday, it was only the fans who showed any form of excitement.

Bruno Fernandes, who also struggled against City, was one of the only vocal players on the field. He did get criticised for it as his own performance was far from perfect but at least he had some reaction to the flop show.

Ronaldo was visibly frustrated as well and so was De Gea. But that's about it.

After the game, Maguire claimed that the home side 'lacked belief' against City. However, it looked like United simply gave up and had no passion or desire to overcome the odds and get a victory. And that's the saddest part of it all.
