'He's taken two or three steps back': Jesse Lingard criticised for staying at Man United last summer

Speaking on talkSPORT, former Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin said: "With Jesse Lingard, staying at Manchester United for the following year, I think he's taken two or three steps back, I really do.

"His stock was so high at West Ham, every week goals or assists. He went there and really changed their season, his stock was so high. Then he wants to go back to Man United and fight for his place.

"Unfortunately, he just couldn't get it right. And now you’re looking at it — what are the possibilities for Lingard now? Now it's time for him to have a clean break and I just felt like last year at West Ham that was the time for him to go."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer promised Lingard a place in the first team last last summer but things haven't worked out for the 29-year-old after a successful loan spell at West Ham.

The forward came close to leaving the club in the January transfer window when his temporary move to Newcastle was blocked by Man United following the Mason Greenwood scandal.
