Back in April, Harry Maguire was heavily jeered and whistled at by England supporters during the 3–0 win against Ivory Coast at Wembley.
Speaking to the Telegraph, the centre-back recounted the incident: "I was a bit shocked to be honest. I've had such a good relationship with the England fans throughout my journey with the England team.
"I wouldn't say I was hurt and upset. Obviously I know my family and my friends might have been affected by it but I was more surprised, really. If that had happened earlier on in my career I think I would've struggled that night.
"That's why I speak on behalf of the young lads. There were lads making their debut that night and for them to hear that, going out having seen what I've done for my country over the last five years, it probably affects them as well."
Despite Maguire's shaky displays for Manchester United, the skipper has always done well in an England shirt for head coach Gareth Southgate.
The 29-year-old is expected to remain a key player at the 2022 World Cup this fall but his long-term Old Trafford future will be decided by Erik ten Hag.
