Eriksen, Fred & more: Ranking Man United midfielders from best to worst

With the midfield unit freed up, the club have added Christian Eriksen to the mix. We are also in talks with Frenkie de Jong but don't expect that deal to happen anytime soon.

Ratings can be highly subjective but let's break down the midfield options available to Erik ten Hag next season.

Worst

Amad: Has not lived up to his potential since joining for a fee of £37 million in the summer of 2020. A failed loan spell to Rangers later, he is yet to make an impact in pre-season as well.

Facundo Pellistri: The same goes for Pellistri, who joined for £9 million around the same time but has been on the same boat as Amad. Could be loaned out again but hasn't really proven his mettle.

Average (Can do better)

Scott McTominay: The 25-year-old has the skills needed to succeed but is often let down by his poor decision-making. Under proper coaching and hard work, however, McTominay could get to the next level.

Hannibal Mejbri: He's aggressive, dangerous and great on the ball - unfortunately, that's not enough to succeed at the highest level. The youngster needs to hone his skills further but if he keeps at it, Mejbri could become world-class in the future.

James Garner: After impressive loan spells, fans have been waiting to see Garner in action for pre-season. Unfortunately, he was injured during the 3-1 win over Crystal Palace and had to sit out. Like the other names on the list, Garner has to work on honing his talent before tearing it up in the Premier League.

Good

Fred: For the longest time, fans had reservations over Fred and whether or not he was good enough to play for United. But over the past two years, Fred has silenced all of his critics to become undroppable. He's hardworking, industrious and the type who will go to any lengths to win.

Donny van de Beek: This may be controversial but Van de Beek has always contributed whenever he steps onto the field. Granted, he hasn't played very often but that could change with Ten Hag in charge. Even during Donny's most recent substitute appearance, he almost immediately impacted play by making a clever assist for Marcus Rashford.

Best

Bruno Fernandes: Be it on the field or off it, Bruno is a born leader and he isn't afraid to be himself. Since arriving at United, he has scored 48 goals already. Sometimes his passing can be off but other than that, Bruno is one of the most creative players at our disposal.

Christian Eriksen: This is where it gets interesting - we also have Eriksen on our books now. The Danish playmaker has proven himself in the Premier League, Serie A and, of course, Ajax. He's widely lauded for his ability to create chances out of nothing, thus spicing up the race for starting spots in midfield.
