'Embarrassing ourselves', 'getting fleeced': fans react as United change midfield transfer plan yet again

Man United keep making headlines for all the wrong reasons - this time, it has to do with their ongoing search for a central midfielder.

Adrien Rabiot's arrival looks increasingly unlikely, with his agent - who also happens to be his mother - demanding exorbitant wages.

Frenkie de Jong's transfer is looking improbable as well: sources in the Netherlands claim that United have withdrawn their offer after a deadline expired. The player remains unconvinced about United and is willing to stay in Spain.

Now, United are getting linked with new players, including Brighton's Moises Caicedo who could've joined them last year for just €5m.

The Athletic also confirms that Casemiro is someone United are keen on as well - but that is a very ambitious move from the Red Devils.

In short, United are no closer to signing anyone in the coming two weeks which would mean they have failed to strengthen this area for a few years when everyone identified the Fred-Scott McTominay pivot as a weakness.

It's not surprising that the fans are not happy at all.

ChrisCurleyman C., The Athletic: "Well John Murtough got his air miles at least. I’m glad [Rabiot is] not coming because he wasn’t the right character. But it’s not just no players coming in, they haven’t shifted players who have to leave either. Dysfunctional institution and that’s on the ownership which is totally unprepared for the modern game."

KimmyBoiUn, Reddit: "The clowns left it till the end to look for a DM and they're looking at someone who seems unrealistic. Great stuff"

utdcynical, Twitter: "We’re embarrassing ourselves big time with the lack of planning. All our midfield targets are literally completely different profiles"

Tim B., The Athletic: "Master negotiator Murtough strikes again."

AE17__, Reddit: "We're not gonna sign anyone are we lol, if we do, we're getting fleeced"

UtdArena, Twitter: "Rabiot to 'other option' Casemiro and a 'top midfielder' if we can’t get Frenkie? There’s no doubt Casemiro’s a fantastic player but this type of lack of planning is exactly what’s plagued us for a decade. Rabiot, Casemiro and Frenkie are three completely profiles."

Ryan P., The Athletic: "The state of it. I don't know what's worse, wanting Rabiot or not being able to get him."

Japples123, Reddit: "Chased FDJ only since June and now scrambling and selling Garner maybe. Great"
