Speaking after England’s 3-3 draw against Germany, Gareth Southgate was asked if Harry Maguire is really important to him and said: “I know everybody says he’s important to me, he’s important to us! It’s us. It’s not me.

“Why do we pick him? Because he’s one of the players who gives us the best chance of winning. So really we should all be wanting a Harry Maguire that’s playing regularly and playing with confidence.

“That applies to quite a few players but he’s the one everything lands on, which must be a tough space for him.”

Maguire last started a Premier League game for Man United in the 4-0 drubbing against Brentford and has not featured ever since. He’s featured in both the Europa League games, but doesn’t seem to be chosen ahead of Raphael Varane or Lisandro Martinez yet.

The centre-back is reportedly ruled out of the Manchester Derby at the weekend after picking up a knock in the international break.
