Carrick set to be named new Middlesbrough manager (reliability: 4 stars)

Former Manchester United midfielder, Michael Carrick, is reportedly edging closer towards the vacant managerial role at Middlesbrough. The 41-year-old is said to have held talks with the club's hierrachy.

However, it is yet unclear if he will accept the job or be confirmed for the assignment. The 41-year-old has been enjoying a break from football after more than two decades working continuously in the sport, and watched Manchester United defeat Everton in the away end at Goodison Park on Sunday night, along with his son, Jacey.

Carrick initially worked alongside Kieran McKenna — now boss of League One side Ipswich Town — under Jose Mourinho’s management, before he was placed in caretaker charge following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He presided over wins against Villareal and Arsenal during his brief stint in charge, as well as a draw with Chelsea. The Englishman left after Ralf Rangnick was appointed on an interim basis. Blackburn Rovers and Burnley are understood to have expressed an interest in Carrick’s services since then, but he has so far elected to remain out of work.

Boro have been without a manager since they sacked Chris Wilder. They could yet decide to turn their attention elsewhere and it is believed the club have held preliminary talks with Rob Edwards, recently sacked by Watford, although no formal approach was forthcoming.

Middlesbrough currently sit 21st in the Championship table, having won just three of their opening 13 league fixtures.
