Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison said: "Donny van de Beek hasn't played a lot of football.
"I watched him against Real Sociedad and he looked a bit short, so I was surprised [to see him in the starting XI] and it's a big call for Erik ten Hag.
"Van de Beek took about five years to play the ball out and that's why he isn't up to the pace with it. He should just spin it in the channels straight away."
Van de Beek made his second consecutive start for Manchester United against Aston Villa on Sunday, filling in for suspended Bruno Fernandes.
The Dutch midfielder was one of the worst players on the pitch in the 3–1 defeat away at Villa Park, going missing for the majority of the game.
