"It was a good battle," explained Harry Maguire to the BBC in his post-match interview.
"Obviously I prefer it when we're 4-0 up like against Iran, it is easier then.
"It was a challenging game, they caused us little problems. We knew we had to defend the box well and we had a lot of corners to defend.
"That is why I'm in the team, to defend the goal and we did that well."
The Manchester United captain added: "This team has a great record of keeping clean sheets. It is something we work on and take pride in.
"It is disappointing not to score or win the game, but I'm sure we'll improve for the future."
Maguire was solid against USA's constant pressing as he withstood their barrage of attacks to keep a clean sheet for England.
The game ended 0-0 but that does little to justify the Three Lions' hard-fought clean sheet.
England are now unbeaten in two World Cup games so far, the first being the 6-2 thrashing of Iran.
