'It was false promises': Jesse Lingard hits out at Man United for freezing him out last season

"I don’t know why I wasn’t playing. I don’t know what the problem was, whether it was politics or whatever," Jesse Lingard told The Telegraph about his last season at Man United.

“I still haven’t got an answer to this day. I didn’t even ask.

"I’d rather that someone out of respect for me being there that long told me 'this is why you’re not playing', but I never got that.

"It was false promises. I was training hard and I was sharp, I was ready to play them games. When you’re working hard in training and don’t play at the end of it, it’s very frustrating."

In the 2021/22 Premier League campaign, Lingard started only two games for United. That was despite assurances that he would play regularly after returning from a successful loan spell at West Ham.

Overall, he played 356 minutes in the league, an equivalent of less than four 90-minute games.

After leaving United as a free agent last summer, he's trying to rebuild his career at Nottingham Forest but is yet to score or assist a goal in the league. He might have a chance to do that on Tuesday when his team will be hosted by Man United.
