Throwback: When Jack Butland took all of Stoke City's penalties in weirdest shootout ever

Jack Butland is set to undergo his medical at Carrington this Thursday ahead of a proposed loan to Manchester United this January.

He's been out of action for Crystal Palace so far but back at Stoke City, he was unstoppable in more ways than one.

During a friendly with German club MSV Duisburg in 2019, Stoke were tied 1-1 and the game suddenly went into penalties.

Stoke Sentinel, a reputed publication, wrote in their live blog: "We’ve all been caught short! There’s a penalty shootout to decide this one, pity nobody told us there’d be one.

"There’s a trophy up for grabs, which has just been plonked on the pitch."

Here's where the story gets weird - Butland ended up taking, and scoring, all three of Stoke's penalties!

Check out the footage here:

He quickly switched roles to go guard his net when it was Duisburg's turn but even they scored all their attempts.

In between, the referee stopped the game and the trophy was awarded to the German hosts.

At the time, Stoke's official Twitter account wrote: "Six penalties, all scored, all of ours were taken by Butland but apparently Duisburg take the trophy."
