OFFICIAL: French Ligue 1 cancels season

After the Dutch Eredivisie, the French Ligue 1 becomes the second major European league to cancel the 2019/20 season due to the coronavirus pandemic, both L’Equipe and RMC Sport report.

Last week, the French Professional Football League (LFP) announced plans to resume Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 on June 17 with a view of finishing the season before UEFA's deadline of August 2.

As per French tier-1 sources, the country's prime minister Edouard Philippe is expected to ban football matches, including those played behind closed doors, until the beginning of August as a part of extended lockdown measures later on Tuesday.

While the Eredivisie denied its leaders Ajax the 2019/20 title, decisions on the champion, promotions, relegations and European spots for next season in French leagues are set to be made in May.

La Liga's president Javier Tebas, meanwhile, recently reiterated the league's intention to finish the season before or after UEFA's deadline and start the 2020/21 campaign in time.
