Courtois, Areola, Lunin: rating Real Madrid goalkeepers in 2019/20 season

Thibaut Courtois - 8.5/10

Definitely the best Real Madrid campaign for the Belgian and perhaps his best season overall.

At the beginning of the season, Thibaut was often criticised for how easily he let those balls go through. As time passed, though, things changed for good and in June, we were probably witnessing the peak Courtois who sometimes singlehandedly (or singleLEGgedly, if you wish) won us points.

43 appearances. 32 goals conceded. 21 clean sheets. These are the stats of the well-deserved Zamora trophy winner and arguably the best goalkeeper in Europe right now. Well done, Thibaut.

Alphonse Areola - 7.5/10

Perhaps one of the toughest tasks for a big club is to find a back-up goalkeeper who doesn't moan about having little game time and who's simply prepared for spending most of the season on the bench.

Zinedine Zidane found the solution in Alphonse Areola who has been a great servant for us this season. The Frenchman even made a couple of Champions League appearances and secured 5 clean sheets in 13 games.

Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that Madrid will seal a permanent move for Areola but anyway, let's thank him for everything and cheers to Zidane who once got a look at such a perfect candidate to be Courtois' back-up.

Andriy Lunin - 7.5/10

This man will be ready to step up if we don't sign a new back-up option for Courtois.

Andriy Lunin has spent half of the season at Real Valladolid and the other half at Real Oviedo where he maintained 6 clean sheets in 20 games.

Lunin saved 5 out 10 penalties in the current campaign, out of which 3 were for Oviedo and 2 for Valladolid. This is really impressive.

Overall, he's conceded 19 goals in 22 games (0.8 avg) while making 53 saves and one unforced error. This man is now tipped to become our second-choice goalie next season.
