6 best players and 4 who should've done better: rating Madrid players in 2020

Best

Thibaut Courtois: 9/10

  • The Belgian goalkeeper won the Zamora trophy after the 2019-2020 campaign, conceding only 20 goals in 34 league matches for Real Madrid and keeping 18 clean sheets during the process.
  • His numbers have got worse this season as he has already conceded 14 goals in La Liga but Courtois has also made several decisive saves.

Ferland Mendy: 9/10

  • The Frenchman has relegated Marcelo to the bench, cementing his place at the left-back position.
  • Mendy hasn't lost a single La Liga game as a starter: 24 wins and 5 draws in 29 games.

Sergio Ramos: 9/10

  • The captain has reached an incredible milestone as he scored his 100th goal at Real Madrid, surpassing Ronald Koeman as the highest-scoring La Liga defender earlier in summer.
  • Ramos doesn't forget about his defensive duties, averaging 1,55 interceptions and 2,6 clearances per game.

Luka Modric: 9/10

  • The Croatian proves that his age is just a number: only a slight muscle overload prevented the 35-year-old from starting his 12th consecutive game for both Real Madrid and Croatia.
  • Modric has scored 6 goals in 2020, averaging 89.75 passing accuracy rate, 1.2 interceptions and 1,25 key passes per game.

Toni Kroos: 9/10

  • Just like Modric, Toni is indispensable for Real Madrid's midfield, traditionally boasting the highest passing accuracy rate than any other teammate with 93,6 so far this season.
  • In 2020, Kroos has scored 5 goals and provided 7 assists.

Karim Benzema: 10/10

  • The French striker was named La Liga's best player of the last season - deservedly so.
  • Benzema scored 23 goals in all competitions in 2020.

Could have done better

Raphael Varane: 3/10

  • The French defender is one of the most-used outfield players in 2020 but it wasn't his year due to a series of mistakes.
  • No other player has made more errors leading to a goal in the Champions League this year than Varane with 3.

Marcelo: 2/10

  • It may appear that Marcelo's time at Real Madrid is getting close to an end: he hasn't featured in more than 20 games during the year.
  • More importantly, he is seemingly unable to help the team any more: they've already lost 7 times with the Brazilian on the pitch.

Marco Asensio: 3/10

  • It would be unfair to judge Asensio who missed the 1st half of the year with a serious knee injury but he hasn't been able to regain his form for the next 6 months.
  • He went for 19 games in a row without single goal contribution - thankfully, this run ended last week.

Luka Jovic: 2/10

  • The Serbian has never managed to prove his worth at Real Madrid, scoring just twice in 32 games.
  • This season, Jovic has made only 5 appearances, struggling with his physical shape after several health issues.

Special mention:

Lucas Vazquez: 7/10

  • Once described as a 'Swiss army knife', Lucas Vazquez endured tough times in the 2019-2020 campaign only to impress a lot this season.
  • Used both as a right-back and a right winger, the 29-year-old has made 17 back-to-back appearances, averaging 1,8 tackles and 1,8 key passes per game.

Eden Hazard: 6/10

  • The Belgian's injury nightmare continues: he has made only 16 appearances in 2020.
  • However, Hazard always impresses when fit: he's managed 2 goals, 3 assists, averaging 1.3 shots and 2.3 dribbles per game.

Rodrygo: 6/10

  • The Brazilian gem is yet to find consistency at Real Madrid but Rodrygo was that close before the unfortunate injury last week.
  • The 19-year-old has managed 5 assists this season, the joint-best result at the club.
