'There are no Black people in positions of greatest power': Seedorf slams racial bias in football

"I played 12 years in Italy: after [coaching] Milan, despite having done a great job, I received no calls," Clarence Seedorf told Gazzetta dello Sport as quoted by ESPN. "Holland is my country, yet again, zero calls.

"What are the selection criteria? Why do great champions have no chance in Europe where they wrote pages of football history?

"Why does Vieira have to go to New York and Henry to Canada? For coaches there are no equal opportunities: if we look at the figures, there are no Black people in the positions of greatest power in football.

"It's something that concerns the whole of society. Everyone, especially those who can change things, must feel the responsibility to create a meritocratic world and keep all the doors open if they aspire to excellence.

"The best results can come from diversity."

The Dutchman spent 3 years of his playing career at Real Madrid, making 159 appearances, scoring 20 goals, winning the La Liga title in 1997 and the Champions League the following year.

As a head coach, Seedorf was in charge of his former side AC Milan for a short four-month spell back in 2016 but was replaced by Filippo Inzaghi.

He then went to manage in China and Brazil before taking over Deportivo de La Coruna in 2018. Clarence failed to save them from relegation and was subsequently fired.

All current La Liga managers are white. In the English Premier League, there is only one black manager, Wolverhampton's Nuno Espirito Santo.
