'I’d make Ramos learn German': fan offers half-humorous take on appointing Hansi Flick as next Real Madrid manager

Zinedine Zidane might walk at the end of the season - and talk has intensified over who could replace him at the helm. Max Allegri, Raul and Jogi Low are named as the most likely replacements, but our fan on Reddit has other ideas.

anisingh15: "Based off of what I’ve been seeing of late, Low is also in contention to become our manager.

"Let’s get the obvious out of our way: his campaign with Germany was almost perfect and he might be an excellent manager overall but what else? Two things just don’t sit right with me.

"Firstly, his assistant manager during the 2014 WC was Hansi Flick. Why does it matter? Well you can't really make an estimate of the magnitude of Hansi Flick’s influence in the way that side played. It could have been all Hansi while Low was just the face of it.

"We can obviously never confirm this theory but Germany’s 2018 debacle and Bayern Munich appointing Hansi Flick over Low, who ultimately proved everyone right by creating an absolutely monstrous Bayern Munich team really gives it some sort of traction and gives us something to think about.

"Yes, Hansi is a good manager but that doesn’t mean Low isn’t. Now, here’s the thing that really goes against Low’s appointment: that German WC win was in 2014. To make you feel how long it’s actually been:

"We’ve, since then, sacked Ancelltoi, appointed Benitez, sacked him too and appointed Zidane mid-season, who eventually left only to come back with two managers appointed in the period between. We won 3 more CL titles and 2 league titles. Chelsea have since changed 5 managers while Klopp hadn’t joined Liverpool back then.

"Mario Gotze (supposedly the next Messi) is playing in the Dutch league. Messi has retired not once but twice, while Zlatan went to MLS and bloody came back from his retirement home to score > 20 PL goals in a season. Mbappe has gone from having Cristiano posters in his bedroom to dancing with Neymar on the field. Haaland was probably Messi’s size back then but now matches him in numbers and Vinicius was probably still missing sitters but in Brazilian favelas.

"There’s only one team that could freeze time and resist change. That’s Manchester United for you ladies and gentleman. Still shit.

"Anyway, 7 years is really fucking long in MANAGER time. Low has nothing to show for all this time. I don’t think it’ll be sensible to appoint a guy so out of touch with club football.

"While we’re at it, where is Hansi ‘Balls of steel’ Flick? He's still not a confirmed German NT appointment as of today and probably not until Euros. Why is he not in contention? Why Raul and Allegri but not the latest CL-winning manager? Is it a language issue because I’d take him even he doesn’t speak a word of Spanish. I’d make Ramos learn German if that’s what it takes."
