Former France midfielder Mathieu Valbuena appeared in court on Wednesday over the sex scandal and black mail that also involves Karim Benzema.

Speaking before the trial, Valbuena said to reporters: "Benzema is not here. It's a pity, but that's the way it is. I'll go all the way to the end to put it all behind me."

Benzema was due to appear in court over the scandal, after being named as a person of interest. However, the Real Madrid striker will not make an appearance, but will instead be represented by his lawyers.

One of Vabuelna's lawyers heavily criticized Benzema for not showing up: "It is terrible that Benzema has not shown up for the trial," He was quoted by Marca.

"We have been waiting five years for a trial with Valbuena. We think Benzema is afraid of it."

Benzema could face up to five years in prison if found guilty of blackmail 0r a fine of €75,000.
