Rating Real Madrid performance against Sevilla based on 4 key factors

Real Madrid picked up a 2-1 win at home against Sevilla to extend their lead atop La Liga by 4 points.

Here's how Los Blancos performed.

Tactics

Carlo Ancelotti's tactics are an open secret at this point - it's 4-3-3 all the way, with a slight change on personnel depending on who's fit.

Real Madrid tried to press high, while relying on quick breaks and the speed and finesse of someone like Vinicius.

Also, with Modric and Kroos piloting affairs in the middle, Real Madrid began to carve out chances from the 60th minute mark - Kroos making 2 key passes.

Against Sevilla, Real Madrid attacked a lot down that left side, exploiting Vinicius' form. As can be seen in the next image, 47% of Real Madrid's attack was down that left flank.

However, Sevilla seemed to understand what Madrid came into this game trying to do.

They forced the hosts back with their passing, and dominated the game in the first hour.

As a result, Sevilla's XG (expected goals) ratio from inside the box carried twice as much threat as Madrid's, as per Understat.

Again it came down to individual brilliance for the win, with Vinicius scoring a stunner, while Eder Militao's thunderbolt smashed the bar before getting turned in by Benzema.

Rating for tactics: 6/10

Finishing

Real Madrid had only 12 shots from open play in the game. Benzema barely had a sniff, and Asensio only had one good chance, which he blazed over.

However, Los Blancos took their chances. Benzema and Vinicius, again saving Madrid any blushes.

Benzema wouln't miss a tap-in after Militao's effort cannoned off the bar and we won't stop talking about Vinicius outside-the-box curler.

Rating for finishing: 8/10

Defending

Not the most impressive defending from Real Madrid on Sunday night.

We saw Militao getting caught out, and another error from Kroos led to the first goal before the 15th minute mark. Casemiro could also have done better with his tracking back.

Truth is, Sevilla could easily have been 2 or 3 goals up by the 20th minute had they taken all the chances Madrid gifted them from their error-prone defending.

Thankfully, individual errors did not end up costing Madrid too much, and we have Courtois to thank for that - he kept making gymnastic saves - 4 of note.

Rating for defending: 4/10

Fighting spirit

Real Madrid committed a lot of fouls in the game - 10 in total. That showed that the boys were ready to fight for each other on the night.

However, there was a miscommunication in some instances during the early exchanges of the game, one of which led to Rafa Mir's goal.

Bounce back ability showed soon after, as Los Blancos would come from behind to win. That's always a commendable trait in any team.

Rating for fighting spirit: 7/10

Overall rating: 7/10
