'Liverpool and Madrid played just 9 times in 67 years': Florentino Perez reiterates need for Super League
During Real Madrid's assembly meeting on October 2, Florentino Perez once again explained why the club is not backing down from its plans of instituting the European Super League.
"With the utmost respect for the national leagues, the major European competitions must offer matches throughout the year. Games that bring young people back," the president said.
"Nadal and Djokovic have played against 59 times, is this boring? Real Madrid and Liverpool have only met 9 times in 67 years. What's the point of depriving fans of these matches?
"UEFA is increasing matches between inconsequential teams. This will only accelerate the decline of European football.
"According to Forbes, Real Madrid is the 13th most valuable club in the world, we were 5th before. There are only 3 football clubs in this ranking. They must be doing something very well in the USA and very badly in Europe.
"The audiovisual income of the NFL has surpassed those of the Champions League. I repeat: they must be doing something very well in the USA and very badly in Europe. Football is losing the battle.
"Football needs professional, modern and transparent management. We must stop the deterioration of football. That's why we took the step of offering a competition like the Super League."
Madrid, alongside Barcelona and Juventus, are the only clubs still committed to the European Super League project.
There has been little news on that front, however. On December 15, the legality of the ESL is set to be determined in court. Perhaps more news will follow after that.
