ABC Espana report that Joao Cancelo, through his agent Jorge Mendes, was offered to Real Madrid before completing his move to Bayern Munich. However, the Blancos said they were not interested.
According to Defensacentral (4 stars), Madrid have had Cancelo on the radar for a while because of his versatility (he can play at left-back too) and attacking prowess. In the end, though, Florentino Perez decided not to go for the Portuguese full-back for two reasons.
First, Joao was deemed too old. The right-back turns 29 in May, and the Merengues apparently want a younger full-back.
Second, the price was too high. Cancelo joined Bayern on loan with a mandatory buy option of €70m. Real Madrid were not ready to pay this much.
Nevertheless, the club will look to reinforce the right-back spot next summer. Promoting Vinicius Tobias, currently playing at Castilla, is also a possibility.
