Real Madrid's biggest weakness in Man City game shown in lineup

Real Madrid had a soft underbelly in their game against Manchester City and the Champions League defending Champions found and exploited it maximally.

Los Blancos conceded in the first two minutes of the game when the team decided not to build a wall for a City freekick. Bernardo Silva spotted the gap and caught out Lunin. That would set the tone for all Man City goals on the night.

The Cityzens struggled to find gaps inside Real Madrid's box as Haaland was shackled by Rudiger playing like a man possessed. City's solution was to attempt shots from distance. They did that 9 times in the game, 5 were on target and 3 flew past Lunin into the net.

Allowing those shots was Real Madrid's biggest weakness at the Bernabeu. Who do we blame for that? We could blame the defenders for not rushing out to make vital blocks, or the midfielders for not closing the gaps quickly enough. Whichever you choose, Real Madrid conceded three goals from outside the area in one night and that's bad news for Carlo Ancelotti.

Real Madrid also missed a fair few chances to win this game. Rodrygo started on the left (and scored) while Vinicius was deployed more centrally. That system confused Man City defenders and had them on the ropes all evening.

Thus, Vinicius registered two assists but he could've scored a couple himself and was guilty of missing at least one big chance. The same goes for Rodrygo and Jude Bellingham. The Englishman had his moment when the Man City goalie was off his lines but he decided to dribble before shooting wide. It just wasn't the best night for Jude.

Kudos to Valverde and Camavinga for Real Madrid's clutch goals on the night but it would've been a totally different story if Real Madrid had capitalized on all the counter-attacks City afforded them. The Cityzens escaped with some home.

Here's a lineup highlighting areas where Madrid could've done better:
