“I forced myself to cancel Instagram on my phone. It’s an over-dependence.” Not the quote you expect from a footballer but there you have Andrea Cambiaso in a nutshell. On the pitch, he was one the best players in the 2023-24 Juventus side. A left-footed handyman who can play as a right- and left-sided defender, right- and left-sided midfielder; if necessary as a mezzala too. Smart, able to read the game, with good pace, Cambiaso was a starter under Massimiliano Allegri. Off the pitch, he plans to enrol at a university soon and does not forget that six years ago he was playing for Albissola in Italy’s fourth tier. “When I heard my teammates complaining about the conditions of a pitch, I think of me running on those clay fields,” he said. A Genoa fan, he has a photo of himself as a ball boy with Mimmo Criscito, who later became his teammate. Nicknamed “Cuchu” for the similarity between his surname and that of the former Inter star Esteban Cambiasso.
