When Slovenians began to notice the rise of Benjamin Sesko, they immediately began planning for a summer at the Euros. The towering Leipzig striker, still only 21, is seen as the natural successor to Zlatko Zahovic, still the country’s all-time leading goalscorer. Sesko scored five in the qualifiers, but contributed so much more than just goals with his all-round play. With him up front and Jan Oblak between the posts, Slovenia boasts two top-class players who will be key to any success. But come what may it is likely to be a lively summer for the striker, with multiple European giants linked. He has played down comparisons to his former RB Salzburg club-mate Erling Haaland. “I went to his games because I was playing in the youth side back then and it was interesting to look at him, because he’s the same height. At that point I was thinking ‘I want to be like him’ … But I don’t like to compare myself to anyone. I’d just love to be myself, and to be the best myself.”
