In 2016 Guglielmo Vicario was playing for Fontanafredda, a club in Italy’s fourth tier: “Every Friday night we used to have dinner, all together, and then go clubbing.” It was semi-professional football. Step by step, Vicario reached Serie A and then Tottenham, where he has established himself as Hugo Lloris’s heir. “If I had no pen, I would have signed for the Spurs with my own blood,” he said. Nicknamed “Venom”, after the Marvel Comics character, he is famous for his reflexes and agility. Vicario grew up with a Gigi Buffon shirt on his bedroom wall and cites Robin Sharma’s The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari as one of his favourite books. When the war in Ukraine broke out, his family welcomed a Ukrainian mother and her son, who are still living with the Vicarios. Fun fact: “Vicario” in Italian means “deputy vicar”. Perfect for a backup keeper.
