"I'm proud to wear the Thuram name on my back," says Marcus Thuram, rejecting the idea that the exploits of his father, Lilian, brings an added pressure. Marcus' light-hearted character contrasts with that of his father, who garnered a more serious image, whilst as a player, he bears no resemblance to Lilian, who as a defender, made an incredible 142 appearances for Les Bleus; only Hugo Lloris has made more. However, Marcus assures that he has a serious side, which he has inherited from his father and which he has needed in order to reach the elite. "When he was a young professional at Sochaux, I repeated to him that he couldn't succeed by laughing, because he was always laughing," said Lilian. Whilst, on the face of it, the family resemblance may not shine through on the pitch, the paternal influence exists and it is not unhelpful to his success.
