It is an ill wind that blows no forward any good. The injury sustained by Lyndon Dykes left Steve Clarke with only three striking options, including the untried Liverpool youngster Ben Doak. When Doak’s own fitness situation ensured there was little point bringing him to Germany, Tommy Conway received the late call. He had featured only for Scotland’s Under-21 team until that point.
Synergy between that underage team and the A squad has become an important theme for Clarke. Conway’s promotion will provide hope to others. The Taunton-born player’s goal return is decent rather than spectacular. His high point in 2023-24 was the FA Cup winner for Bristol City – the club he has been with since childhood - against West Ham. City are determined to agree a long-term deal for Conway but he is yet to sign.
