In qualifying Vanja Drkusic had chances in the second halves of games, but coach Matjaž Kek really sees the 24-year-old as one for Slovenia's future. He has developed fast since leaving Slovenia as a teenager for ultimately unsuccessful spells in the Netherlands and Italy. He returned home to Bravo in 2020, matured, and earned his big move to Sochi. In Russia, he has been improving steadily, captaining the side and attracting serious interest from bigger clubs in Europe, with Sochi rejecting bids last January. After the Euros it will be a real surprise if the resilient, uncompromising defender doesn't secure a move to a stronger European league.
