Almost relegated with Stuttgart a year ago; next season he will be playing in the Champions League. The Swabians have been the surprise of this Bundesliga season – apart from Leverkusen – and Waldemar Anton has played a big part in that. Stuttgart's captain and a tough no-nonsense defender, he leads the way and offers versatility. “Waldemar is an extremely stable defender with a big heart,” is Julian Nagelsmann’s verdict. Hardly ever has a bad day, and also dares to make risky passes – so could be an option in defensive midfield, as well as at centre-back and right-back. Born in Uzbekistan, his ethnic German parents originally called him Wladimir, but when they moved to Germany with him in 1998, his first name was changed. In Stuttgart, they call him Waldi or Wowa. Now 27, he made his national team debut against France in March.
