There is a clear difference in perception over William Saliba on either side of the English Channel. In England, he is regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League and his place in the 2022-23 PFA Team of the Year reflected that. However, he is not held in similarly high esteem in France or - more importantly - by Didier Deschamps. "He is having a good season but he also does things that I don't like so much. For France, he has limited game time but when he plays, that hasn't necessarily gone well. The hierarchy doesn't favour him but he is here," said Deschamps, who called Saliba up in the most recent international break. Whilst Saliba is part of Les Bleus' squad this summer, the chances of him earning a starting spot seem slim, regardless of another stellar season of performances for Arsenal.
