Angel Di Maria explains why he left Real Madrid
- Di Maria admits that he never really wanted to leave the Bernabeu.
- However, the transfer to Man United has happened.
- The Argentine is content with the 'most beautiful last ovation from the Bernabeu.'
The Argentine star reveals that the move to Manchester United was not his first choice.
“My intention was always to stay at Real Madrid. I do not know much about what happened as these are more things for representatives,” Di Maria told Marca. “These things happen in football. I left Madrid, but I had the most beautiful last ovation from the Bernabeu and with that I remain calm.”
A beloved figure at Santiago Bernabeu, Di Maria spent four years in Madrid, the highlight of which was his Man of the Match performance in the 2014 UEFA Champions League final.
Despite joining the Premier League giants for a then-British record fee of £59.7m, Di Maria’s career in England never took off and he was sold to Paris Saint-Germain just a year later. The winger rediscovered his form with the Ligue 1 powerhouse, winning a domestic triple in two of his three first seasons and continuing to seek their first Champions League title.
