2 shocking cameos in Rome & 4 just below par: ratings
Barcelona crush out of the Champions League as some players will be scrutinised and re-evaluated
Samuel Umtiti - 2
A sorry reminder for Umtiti that you don't go and ask for a fatter contract at the season-defining stage! The Frenchman made so many mistakes for a Barcelona defender it's shocking. Caught out of position all the time, doing some flimsy stuff with the ball and letting the opponent score.
The miscommunication in Dzeko's opener is stunning as neither Umtiti nor Pique was arsed to do something about the Bosnian, strutting to the goal.
Key stat: just one tackle won.
Nelson Semedo - 2
Absolutely nowhere to be found. No support for Sergi Roberto down the right, no real help to defence where he couldn't properly hold on to the ball at times. Just nothing. As if he were not on the pitch. Well, Kostas Manolas didn't really notice the Portuguese when he was generously allowed to enter AS Roma history with a winning header.
Key stat: zero tackles, dribbles, shots.
Gerard Pique - 4
Alright, Gerard did better than Samuel, but the goal No 1 is equally on him and goal No 2 he just invited Edin Dzeko into the box to foul him there. The Bosnian did have a lot of fun with Barca defence even if it seemed that Pique did tame Dzeko more often than the other way round. But two fatal errors are just too much to forgive.
Key stat: made 5 tackles - more than anyone else - but blunders proved costly.
Ivan Rakitic - 4
It's mainstream to blame it all on Rakitic, but he was just limited in a rudderless team. The Croatian is a dependent player, he plays much better when the team perform. The least one can ask of such players when things don't go well is 'at least don't do anything wrong'. But...
Ivan was shaky. Maybe the pressure did get to him, his passes were as nervous as he himself. Leo Messi had to wonder why he deserved to receive those clumsy balls from the No 4.
Key stat: 80 percent pass success, less than other Barca midfielders, yet more than all but one Roma player.
Sergi Roberto - 4
Feeling no support from Semedo perhaps, he had to drift inward to help the team, but the best he could muster was a shot on goal at the early stage of the game. After that, the semblance of our right flank kept quiet. That's some contrast with AS Roma where even a right centre back posed more danger to Barca goal than our two full-backs combined.
Key stat: the only player to have a shot on goal bar Messi.
Andres Iniesta - 5
If Rakitic couldn't drag it forward, the veteran tried be the creative spark of the team. But in the first half notably, he was targeted by Roma pressing and every time he got the ball, he had from one to three opponents around. Fouling him or not, they effectively kept Andres's danger at bay.
He made a great through ball at the end but a cross that ensued was not good enough. It's really really sad to award Iniesta a low mark, but it's his high standards that got all us accustomed to his magic.
Key stat: dispossessed thrice, more than any other player on the pitch.
Rest of the lot: MATS could've done better with Roma opener, almost conceded from Manolas much earlier than the Greek actually scored (4); Alba put in a shift at the back, but unimpressive going forward (5); Busquets quieter than ever (5); Suarez was left high and dry with no balls fed (4); Messi at least tried, but he can't carry his teams on his shoulders forever (6).
