Sam Johnstone planning future without Manchester United
Our loanee at Aston Villa admits it's impossible to compete with the world's best keeper David De Gea
Johnstone speaks of his difficult start at Villa: ''You’ve come in, it was difficult, you did hear some of your own fans saying: 'Go back to Manchester United'. It was just a difficult period. Then it kicked on.''
But then he settled down: ''I enjoy seeing fans say that because I enjoy being here. Basically, I’ve gone from one end of the spectrum to the other. That’s something I’m proud of, to have turned their opinions of me. You just need those games to get your confidence.''
Speaking of his United career, he adds: ''I’d have liked to have done it. But you’ve got the world’s best goalkeeper, David de Gea, at the club and you can’t wait around forever. I have to create my own career. You want to be challenging to get into the England setup.''
Johnstone kept more clean sheets than any other Championship goalkeeper in 2017. This season, he sits third in the rankings with 18 clean sheets in 42 Championship appearances. United will likely sell Sam at a discount price, in the current market at least.
